Sports and fitness uses for your massager

Massage has long been used by sports clubs and professional athletes to help prepare and recover after. There are huge benefits to be had in this field. Please check out our science Based Guide To Sports Massages .

More recently massage guns and foam rollers have been marketed as self massage alternatives. The problem is that massage guns and foam rollers not very effective. On the other hand genuine vibration massagers deliver everything they promise and more. Lets look at why.

Vibrating massagers

As discussed in our Sports and exercise guide to vibration massage , therapeutic vibration has a host of excellent benefits. As discussed in our summary of the evidence , genuine vibration massagers are designed to deliver copious amounts of this vibration at the optimum therapeutic frequencies, while percussion massagers (massage guns) are designed to drive their heads in like jackhammers. Any vibration they deliver will be limited and not at the optimum frequency.

Further, strenuous exercise causes microscopic damage to muscle fibres (causing soreness, but stimulating growth). Therapeutic vibrations assist healing whereas “jack hammering” will disrupt the healing fibres.

Foam rolling vs massage

Foam Rollers

For the reasons shown in this infographic the results from using foam rollers will be far inferior to those from a professional therapist. Because of this the results obtained in clinical trials have been minimal at best, while real world results where uses are not chosen for suitability and supervised are likely worse. For more info please see our guide: Do foam rollers work .

Cordless General Purpose Massager coming

There is no comparison between the effectiveness of our General Purpose Massagers or Quad Head Massagers and a massage gun. Further, our machines have handles that allow self use anywhere on one’s body.

With that, we understand that people like the convenience of a cordless machine, especially at places like gyms and sports clubs where power points are not readily available. We are currently building a cordless version of the General Purpose Massager which will have the same mechanism and ergonomic handle. We are using a very high quality battery and custom motor to give it the same power as the corded version with over an hour of operation before needing to be re-charged. Stay tuned for updates.
